Mevagissy Harbour : Encounter Cornwall : Canoeing, Cycling, Walking Holidays in Cornwall, The Saints Way and the South West Coast Path

Mevagissey

With a past based upon pilchard fishing and the proceeds of smuggling contraband, Mevagissey today remains a tight knit maze of fishermen's cottages, character pubs and quayside restaurants surrounding a compact and imposing harbour that is a delight to wander round.

Fishermen still land local skate, lobster and plaice in the heart of a village with a classic Cornish feel, surrounded by stunning coastline, lobster pots and images of the sea. With Encounter Cornwall this atmospheric little haven is the end point for our Coast to Coast and Eden cycle routes and a dramatic start to our Coast Path Walking.

Mevagissy Fishermen : Encounter Cornwall : Canoeing, Cycling, Walking Holidays in Cornwall, The Saints Way and the South West Coast Path

With plenty of time to wander around and explore, relax with a drink by the water or take a dip at nearby Polstreath Beach. "Meva" is a delight and the perfect spot to wind down before or after your journey. Highlights for those that want to explore further include the little lifeboat house, aquarium on the Harbour Wall and a very informative local museum. The museum building was originally built to cover the construction and repair of the town's vessels with timbers "borrowed" from older boats and the spoils of the wreckers.

Always lively, June sees a week of festivities at the harbour with gig racing, floral Dance's and plenty of local mead and beer. Finally for a fantastic start or end to your trip consider arriving or departing Meva directly from its harbour on the St Austell Bay Ferry a wonderful passenger trip across St Austell Bay and round wild Gribbin Head to land you at Fowey Harbour.

Bikes can be taken on the ferry which is a stunning 30 minute crossing with the added incentive of a possible basking shark or dolphin sighting on route.

Lost Gardens of Heligan

Lost Gardens (Grass Face) : Encounter Cornwall : Canoeing, Cycling, Walking Holidays in Cornwall, The Saints Way and the South West Coast Path

Two miles northwest of Meva brings you to the world-renowned Lost Gardens of Heligan. The gardens, rescued by Tim Smit (who went on to create the Eden Project), were recovered from a jungle of bramble and undergrowth after years of neglect and now boast an amazing array of fauna and flora, There is a lost valley of bamboo and ferns dotted with sculptures, ponds and wildflower meadows as well as fully restored flower and vegetable gardens.

Bang on route for our Cyclists and only a small detour for the coast walkers, this is a popular attraction for a visit. If you have less time you can still enjoy a leafy refreshment stop at the tea room before heading on towards the coast.
